Does Microsoft 365 Include Copilot?

The short answer: yes… but there’s a catch.
Microsoft 365 and Microsoft 365 Copilot are no longer a simple “pay once, get everything” story. Depending on the plan you choose, Copilot can be built into the subscription, available as Copilot Chat at no additional cost, or sold as a separate Copilot license. And that distinction matters—especially for businesses trying to calculate the real cost of AI.
Here’s the question worth asking before you buy: “Do I need Microsoft 365 with AI, or do I need an AI workspace that works across my entire stack?”

1. First, separate “Copilot Chat” from “Microsoft 365 Copilot”
This is where most licensing confusion starts. Microsoft says Copilot Chat is available at no additional cost for users with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and an Entra account. 2. What is actually bundled?
For individuals, the answer is much simpler. Microsoft’s current India consumer page lists Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans with Copilot included. The AI features are tied to the subscription owner rather than being shared with every Family member.

3. The business licensing trap: “I already have Microsoft 365, so why am I paying again?”
Because the Microsoft 365 subscription and the full Copilot license solve different problems. A business can already have Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and OneDrive—and still not have the full work-grounded Copilot experience.
Microsoft currently lists Microsoft 365 Copilot Business as an add-on for eligible Microsoft 365 customers. On Microsoft’s India site, the current promotional listing shows ₹1,495.73 per user/month when paid yearly, with GST extra. Microsoft also lists plans such as Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot and Business Premium with Copilot, which combine the base productivity subscription and Copilot in one plan.
So the purchasing question becomes: Are you adding AI to an existing Microsoft 365 environment, or are you buying a new Microsoft 365 plan that already includes Copilot?

5. What does full Microsoft 365 Copilot actually add?
- Work-grounded assistance: Copilot can use relevant organizational context and Microsoft 365 data that the user is permitted to access.
- In-app assistance: Copilot works inside key apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, subject to licensing and market availability.
- Work IQ: Microsoft describes this as an intelligence layer that helps Copilot understand work context, relationships and workflows.
- Agents: paid Copilot licensing opens access to Microsoft-built and custom agent capabilities, with some agent scenarios requiring Azure or additional services.
- Analytics: organizations can measure adoption, usage and business impact through Microsoft’s management and reporting capabilities.
6. But what if your team uses more than Microsoft?
This is the point where the conversation gets more interesting. Microsoft 365 Copilot is strongest when your organization already lives inside Microsoft’s ecosystem: Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and related services.
But many modern teams are not Microsoft-only. They may use Google Workspace, Slack, Notion, Jira, Confluence, multiple AI providers and a mix of cloud services. 8. So, which option should you choose?
Choose Microsoft 365 Copilot if…
- Your employees spend most of their day in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.
- You want AI tightly connected to your existing Microsoft 365 environment.
- You prefer one vendor for productivity apps, identity and AI administration.

Conclusion: bundled does not always mean complete
Microsoft 365 has moved Copilot much closer to the core subscription experience—especially for individual plans—and eligible business users can access Copilot Chat without buying the full Copilot license. But for organizations, “Copilot included” still depends on exactly which plan and which Copilot experience you mean.
The smartest buying decision is therefore not simply about finding the cheapest Copilot button. It is about matching the AI layer to the way your company actually works.
